AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

AUTISM DYNAMIC INTERVENTIONS (ADI)

DEPT. OF PSYCHIATRY, TNMC & BYL NAIR CH. HOSPITAL, MUMBAI

Dr. Malay Dave*, Mr. Saif Bijliwala**

Autism with its core symptoms of poor attention, behavioral deficits, inadequate interaction skills and odd movement patterns demands intensive motor, cognitive and psycho-social intervention.

Thus, dealing with a child along the autistic spectrum, requires a multi-disciplinary team. The process of thereby setting up services to cater to these needs, and setting up an adequately well resourced team, proves to be a challenge. We will discuss issues pertinent to setting up such services for those looking out to expand or initiate facilities, in their existing services.

Among the various interventions for Autism a few of the most effective techniques practiced by occupational therapists have been sensory motor and sensory integration training, cognitive – perceptual training, Verbal Behaviour Analysis and behavior modification. This second half of the talk, illustrated with video clippings from therapy sessions, will highlight these techniques and discuss their relevance to training persons with Autism and related disorders.

**Psychiatric Occupational Therapist and Honorary Consultant, Autism Dynamic Interventions (ADI), Dept. of Psychiatry, TNMC & BYL Nair Ch. Hospital, Mumbai

SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES

CLINIC TO CLASSROOM

AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

LIFE CENTRE FOR LEARNING DISABILITIES

Dr. Ravindra Kamath*, Dr. Henal Shah**, Dr. Alka A. Subramanyam***,

Dr. Surbhi Rathi+, Ms. Simran Sachdev#

Worldwide, 7-15% of children at any given point of time suffer from specific learning disabilities. Thereby, in an average classroom in India, among 50-60 children, at least 2-4 children would have specific learning disabilities (SLD). Unfortunately, it is only in the last 5-10 years that this is being recognized as a problem by the stakeholders’ viz. parents, teachers and diagnosticians.

In order to deal with the child with SLD, it takes a multi-disciplinary team to assess the child. At the LIFE Centre for Learning Disabilities at Nair Hospital, Mumbai, the children are assessed by such a team and thereby a multi-faceted management approach is followed.

This workshop, specially designed for those interested in initiating or expanding their services for such children, will focus on the following issues:

  1. The importance and need of services in today’s scenario
  2. A brief overview of SLD
  3. The process of assessment
  4. Associated co-morbid physical ailments
  5. A brief glimpse into remediation

The format of the workshop will be largely interactive. There will be a lot of time allotted thereby for discussion and resolving any issues pertinent to administrators, policy makers, diagnosticians, parents and teachers.
